The Christmas tree

The Christmas tree is another tradition that belongs to Christmas. The Christmas tree originates from Germany. Denmark's first Christmas tree was - as far as is known - lit on the Holsteinborg estate in South Zealand in 1808. However, this tree is not described in more detail - on the other hand, there is more information about the first tree in Copenhagen. Holstein Christmas in Copenhagen On Christmas Eve in 1811, the first Copenhagen Christmas tree was lit at Ny Kongensgade no. 221 at the home of the young doctor Martin Lehmann, his wife Frederikke and their little son Orla, aged 1 1/2. The people of Copenhagen were prepared that something unusual was going on, as a few days earlier a large fir tree had been carried into the living room. On Christmas Eve at 5 pm, curious Copenhageners could see that the Lehmanns had set up the tree in the living room and lit candles on the branches. Martin Lehmann was the son of a pastor from Holsten, and probably knew the Christmas tree custom from his own childhood. The Christmas tree candles are still a classic Christmas tradition and remain one of the most popular items in the assortment as Christmas approaches.
